Buying Guide: Choosing The Best Value In Old Backgammon Sets
- Playing surface and feel: A felt or velour surface reduces friction and allows smooth piece movement. Leatherette finishes offer durability and a premium look, though felt interiors can enhance classic play.
- Magnetic stability: Magnetic boards help prevent pieces from shifting during travel. Consider the strength of magnets and how well they keep pieces aligned on the board.
- Board size and portability: Larger boards deliver a traditional feel but reduce portability. Travel sets typically range from 9 to 15 inches when folded; choose a size that fits your storage and travel needs.
- Storage and organization: Look for built-in compartments, cases with zippers, and magnetic closures to keep pieces secure and organized during transport.
- Material quality and aesthetics: Rosewood inlays, leatherette finishes, and premium felt surfaces add visual appeal and durability. Balance craftsmanship with price to find real value.
- Multi-game versatility: If you value variety, 3-in-1 sets for chess, checkers, and backgammon offer convenience, though you may trade off some depth in backgammon-specific features.
- Durability vs. weight: Heavier sets often feel sturdier but may be less portable. Consider your usage scenario—home, travel, or both—and pick accordingly.
- Maintenance: Leatherette finishes are easy to clean; wooden sets may require care to maintain luster. Check for protective cases and smooth hinges to extend life.
In evaluating value, prioritize sets with secure transport, a quality playing surface, and durable components. Multi-game options provide convenience, but dedicated backgammon sets with a robust, travel-friendly design often deliver the most consistent play experience for enthusiasts who value reliability and longevity. The selections above cover a range of styles and budgets while maintaining strong playability and craftsmanship suitable for American players’ preferences.
